India - Baba Budan Honey
Thogarihunkal Estate is located in Chikmagalur on the rolling hills of Baba Budangiri, the birthplace of Indian coffee. At 1350 m above sea level, the estate has maintained separate blocks for Arabica and Robusta, which are then segregated by varietal. Chandragiri, Selection 795, and micro lots of Selections 5B and 6 are the Arabica varieties that are grown on the estate. The estate uses modern processing facilities to transform the cherries into green coffee. These include two pulping units, multiple fermentation tanks, spacious drying yards, and raised beds.
Working with the plantation, our origin partners Ekata have identified certain ‘blocks’ on the estate where they assessed trees being grown there to have the greatest early potential for quality improvements for specialty coffee production.

More Information On This Coffee
Coffee was introduced to India during the late 17th century. The story goes that an Indian pilgrim to Mecca – known as Baba Budan – smuggled seven beans back to India from Yemen in 1670 (it was illegal to take coffee seeds out of Arabia at the time) and planted them in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka. The Dutch (who occupied much of India throughout the 17th century) helped spread the cultivation of coffee across the country, but it was with the arrival of the British Raj in the mid-nineteenth century that commercial coffee farming fully flourished. Initially Arabica was widespread, but huge infestations of coffee leaf rust led many farms to switch to Robusta or Arabica/Liberica hybrids.
