Marilec's family grew beans in La Calera, municipality of Palacaguina, department of Madriz, Nicaragua.
At the age of eight, she explored the coffee mills with her mother and, later, during high school, worked part-time sorting coffee to cover expenses. In 2000, PRODECOOP arrived in her town, and both she and her father joined the company as security guard and sorter, respectively.
At that time, she met Eduardo Videa, her first mentor, manager, and coffee taster at PRODECOOP, who sparked her passion for coffee. In addition to her work at Marelic Coffee, Marilec, along with her husband Alex, also a coffee taster, owns two coffee farms in Los Planes, Dipilto, N.S. They also managed a tasting lab and a small office to connect with clients and producers.
Coffee cultivation in Nicaragua began around 1850, driven by German immigrants who took advantage of the fertile volcanic lands and high-altitude climate in Matagalpa and Jinotega. It quickly became one of the main export products, sustaining the local economy.
After consolidating itself as an economic pillar in the 19th century, production faced political instability and natural disasters, recovering from the 1990s onwards. Nicaragua is currently the 12th largest producer in the world, with the sector dominated by small farmers (15 hectares or less).
